Simon Cowell and Lauren Silverman are proud parents of a healthy baby boy. Simon revealed on Twitter hours after the birth that he had named the child Eric after his late father Eric Cowell.

Baby Eric was born at 10.45pm UK time, 17.45 New York time, weighing 6lbs 7oz.

Eric was born at the Lenox Hill Hospital in Manhattan’s Upper East Side, New York where Simon made an overnight dash to be with Lauren for the birth.

A source said: “You couldn’t take the smile off Simon’s face. “Ever since he walked in the hospital he was beaming from ear-to-ear. “Lauren was so happy to see him when he walked in. It is the perfect Valentine’s gift any couple could have.

Simon was spotted outside the hospital shortly after the birth getting some air.

Simon named his Son Eric after his father who he was very close to, speaking to Piers Morgan on his Tonight Show on CNN, Simon spoke in detail about the day 12 years ago that Eric died.

The former EMI executive succumbed to a heart attack in 1999 aged 81, while he was at home with Cowell’s mother Julie.

‘I can’t lie, it was the worst day of my life,’ Simon said, ‘a horrible horrible time.’

He also credited his father with giving him a unique ability to use his charms to be able to reach out and connect with anybody regardless of their background.

‘He said to me – because he was successful, my dad, when he ran his company – he said, ‘everybody around you has an invisible sign on their head which says ‘make me important’, Cowell revealed.

‘What I understood from that is that you’ve got to recognise that everyone around you wants to be recognised, wants to be appreciated.

‘What I try and remember is that when I make a show, everyone has played a part in it. The show is created, truthfully, by 500 people every week.’

Simon and Lauren are expected to take the baby home to their rented apartment in Manhattan before returning to England where Simon’s mother Julie will be eager to see her new grandson.
